Description: Fiction writer Tobias Wolff electrified critics with his scarifying 1989 memoir, which many deemed as notable for its artful structure and finely wrought prose as for the events it describes. The two are so mingled sometimes.” Wolff's own life became famous in 1993, when his memoir of his childhood, This Boy's Life, was made into a Hollywood film starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro. It is no wonder, then, that at the end of This Boy's Life, the memoir form fails to give absolution, fails to really eradicate the narrative unreliability that has led Toby (and the reader) to this end-point. Memoirs vary greatly in how much reflection they have. Primarily known as a writer of memoirs – most notably This Boy's Life – and short stories, Wolff has also garnered praise for his two novels as well. 8) Wolff is not only a fiction writer, but a pioneer in the field of memoir, applying techniques of storytelling to nonfiction. It details a childhood so shocking, at times you just have to shake your head. The four best memoirs I have ever read, and I have read too many, are Frank McCort's, Angela's Ashes, “Tobias Wolff's, “This Boy's Life,” Geoffrey Wolff's, “The Duke of Deception,” and Jeanette Walls, “The Glass Castle.”. So I'm dressing up this post with some snips from This Boy's Life, Wolff's memoir of his transient, messy boyhood, anchored by his time in rural Washington state. The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls. Some, like This Boy's Life, read like novels, with very little Voice of Experience or “story” in Gornick's sense. I think of it as a quiet memoir of rebellion—and she's funny, too.
